Reverse Mortgage News

One of cinema’s most memorable quotes came from the film “A Few Good Men” in which Jack Nicholson’s character retorts “You can’t handle the truth!” In an age where many in society see truth as relative and subjective there are a few truths about life we should embrace for greater happiness and productivity.

1- Life isn’t fair. It seems obvious but our minds often subconsciously trick us asking ‘why is this happening to me?!

2- First steps are always the hardest. Whether it’s a diet, a new marketing plan or parenting making a substantial change requires that first leap of faith…actually just a small step.

3- Good things don’t happen overnight. Think back on any great accomplishment you’ve made. Did it happen instantaneously? No. Great rewards require great commitment and accomplishment and good old hard work.

4- Everyone is not on board. Just because you have a great idea…

  1. Good one Shannon.

  2. LIFE IS WHAT YOU GIVE IT,,,

    • Cliff,

Life is NOT what you give it. That reeks of the fairness ideology. Consider the millions of children who die annually in places like the Republic of Congo, the country the US sponsored — Liberia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Eritrea, the Central African Republic, Niger, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Togo, Madagascar, and Afghanistan. As of May 2012, not one of those countries had a per capita annual GDP of $1,000.

I also remember the farmers who diligently farmed in the Ukraine under Stalin showing how futile the USSR five year plans really were only to be starved to death by the Stalin henchman, Khruschev. Those farmers gave only to be starved to death.

Then there was the millions put down and murdered during the Mao cultural revolution in China. Now we see the same type of policies being carried out by a maniac in North Korea. Or how about the mass executions in South Vietnam by an avenging and conquering North Vietnam. Who can forget the butchery in Cambodia or Laos. Even many of our neighbors to the south have seen atrocities which also defy the adage: “Life is what you give it….”

Your all cap line reminds one of the movie, the Ugly American. In fact life is just that, life. What one gets out of it to some degree depends on what we are given and also what we put into it. I really doubt if you would even be alive today if you had been born on the same day you were but to parents who lived in and were native to one of the countries listed.

Like you, I was blessed to have been born in the first half of the twentieth century here in the US so that what I get out of life could be much more affected by what I give it.

Even in the US, life is not nearly so fair as you make it. Although his policies exasperates the gap, our President clearly points out the growing gap between rich and poor in this country. Life is not fair but the wonderful thing about it is that it is life.

  3. Shannon,

“Rarely does anything truly worthwhile occur without sacrifice.” One man, who accomplished much for others during his over ninety years on this earth, had a one word motto in a frame sitting on his desk. In beautiful red font it read: “…sacrifice….”

  4. So much attention is given to the way we think without understanding that our hearts tell the mind what to do. Most have been taught it is the other way around. Starting with admitting (as you pointing out) our hurts and short comings is the beginning to a better life for us and all those we touch.

Great video. I appreciate what you offer and often share it with others.

  5. Shannon,
    Excellent – That was good!

  6. Very good, Shannon. This is a video/wisdom that needs to be digested on a regular basis. Kudos
