Four ‘Excellences’ for reverse mortgage professionals

There are many traits that serve us well in life and especially as a reverse mortgage professional. So today we will examine four excellences that not only build exceptional character but will set you apart as a professional with the highest standards.

Excellence in Morals

“Moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts”, said the ancient Greek Philosopher Aristotle. What habits have you developed to build your moral excellence? What habits would you like to develop?

Excellence in Judgment

As a reverse mortgage professional, you’ll be faced with difficult situations. How should we approach the challenge of making the right choice? The Greeks called this phronesis, or as Joh Bradshaw defines it “the ability to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason”. In other words, we should ask ourselves what is the right thing? Is this the right time? Are my reasons for making this choice good?

Excellence in Organization

Chaos reigns supreme when our lives are disordered and messy. Aristotle said, “Everything ought to have its own proper place and so be ready for use and not require to be searched for”. The more organized our lives the more clearly we can think. Have a system for your loan paperwork. Follow up with homeowners in your CRM, take note of conversations, and schedule callbacks. Process your email and empty your inbox each day. These are just a few ways we can strive for excellence in your organization. Where will you begin improving your organization?

Excellence in Public Speaking

It’s no secret that gifted and skilled communicators have more influence. In fact, Aristotle’s seminal work Rhetoric is a treatise on the art of persuasive speaking. However, underlying this ability must be a foundation of the virtues of moral character which influences the underlying force of your message. Will you commit a few hours each month to improve your speaking skills?

What traits of excellence would you add to this list? Share your thoughts by commenting below.

The proceeding was influenced in part by the column Aristotle’s 11 Excellences for Living a Flourishing Life and the writings of Aristotle.
