From books to films to stories, numerous offerings bear the title, The Gift, especially at this time of year. What we often tend to overlook, however, is what we bring to the table: the blessing of ourselves.
Being in a mission-driven industry, reverse mortgage professionals are accustomed to helping others every day. There’s great satisfaction, even joy, in knowing a senior client has been approved for a reverse mortgage loan and will be able to keep their beloved home, or that refinancing significantly reduces anxiety for a couple struggling to get by on a meager income. But your gift is greater than this.
On a macro level, reverse mortgage, like any professional service, can be viewed as a transformational tool to help people improve their overall quality of life. In a very real sense, you’re giving the far grander gifts of:
- reduced stress
- realized dreams
- peace of mind
- and that most ephemeral gift of all, happiness.
This holiday season, take time to honor yourself as a gift to those you serve, both as a reverse mortgage professional, and in the broader picture of your life and all the roles you embody: partner, parent, child, sibling, friend, colleague, mentor/advisor, and more.
A bumper sticker bears the inspiring message, “You are the miracle. Let yourself happen.” Seeing everyone we encounter each day as the gift that they are, in their own lives and in ours, we co-create a more loving world. There is no greater blessing.
Wishing you joy-filled holidays and manifold gifts as we enter 2019.

Amara,
Keeping the view that we are not just providing a product but helping seniors, changes everything about how we approach our business. It is good to be reminded of our real objective and goals.
For many seniors having someone to care about their interests and needs truly is a blessing. I have had several clients end our lending “adventure” with a prayer of thanksgiving not just for meeting their monetary need but also for bringing someone to them who would take the time to listen and help.
Thanks, The Critic! In the end this is what every service business is really about: caring for one another and helping people improve their lives.
I appreciate your appreciation ~ and that you read all our posts 🙂
Blessings,
Amara
Hi Amara, your article is very well put indeed. I cherish helping my Seniors and I get my “feel good” feelings as a bonus!!
Thank you, Hanson! I’m sure your clients love having you as their Reverse Mortgage professional!
Happy Holidays ~
Amara, you are so right, and we tend to forget that. I get so much joy out of helping my clients that it seems I shouldn’t actually be making a living doing it! Being in this business reminds me that the job you love is not a job at all. Thank you for reminding us of what we do give in our profession, in spite of all the negativity out there.
Why does the industry make so much money on a reverse mortgage. These products should be to help the elderly stay in their homes and have funds for the food and medicine they need. The lenders are paid a fortune to make these loans and that needs to stop. FHA needs to change this these are no better than the pay option arms that paid lenders and loan officers tons of money on the back end and really were not good for the consumer. The people that take these loans are usually desperate and lenders and loan officers just prey on them and their vulnerabilities.
