Tolerance means to permit something to occur without interference. While Fat Chunren was a man to be revered ten centuries ago in China.

Marcus Aurelius was not the same as depicted in the movie, Gladiator. Nonetheless he is considered on the good emperors who ruled Rome. His rule was in the last half of the Second Century (over 100 years after Jesus gave the ).

Marcus Aurelius ruled over a city full of slaves. He enforced what Julius Caesar was famous for throughout western Europe, Pax Romana. Outside the walls of Rome he reigned through fear and death. So his word of tolerance seemed limited in practice.

Jesus on the other hand when presenting the law of His kingdom on the mount told His disciples in Matthew 5:44: “”But I say to you, Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.”” Love requires more than toleration.
