5 Gears to Shift You into a Positive Mental State

Have you ever driven an old car with a manual transmission with one gear that always gets stuck? With the clutch in you push hard but it always grinds. No fun. In much the same way we can find ourselves stuck in a gear mentally. It could be fear, doubt, unbelief, negativity or anger. So just how can we shift gears mentally to stop feeling bad? Here are a few things I’ve learned in recent years.

1- Rethink your thoughts. Please stop judging yourself for your thoughts. Thoughts are subjective and often fleeting with our emotions. Rather than harshly judging yourself for your thoughts look at how you act on them instead. Those who fall prey to criticizing themselves for their thoughts will continually find themselves unhappy.

  1. What helps me is to smile while I am working, even when I am alone. It really perks up my overall attitude.

      Good point and when we remember, many of us do the same.

      However, I feel a lot more empathy with forward originators than those who are in management within the reverse mortgage industry just as I am sure you feel more in common with in-house personnel recruiters than with reverse mortgage originators. Even our compensation and benefits are structurally much different than those in management.

      • Having worked for several years as a reverse mortgage loan originator I feel a strong affinity with our sales force. That said we do engage with recruiters occasionally but even with that in mind our foremost mission is to write, present and educate RMLO’s.
